Four accused of Lunney attack sent forward to Special Criminal Court

The four men charged in connection with the abduction and attack of QIH manager Kevin Lunney over six months ago have all been remanded in custody to appear before a sitting of the Special Criminal Court.
All four appeared before Cavan District Court today (Thursday) where the books of evidence were served on each of them respectively.
A State application was granted to make a number of amendments to the charges against the defendants.
All four are charged separately with the false imprisonment of Mr Lunney at Drumbade, Cavan, on September 17, 2019.
They are: Luke O’Reilly (66) with an address at Mullahoran Lower, Kilcogy, Co Cavan; Alan O’Brien (38) of 51 Shelmalier Road, East Wall, Dublin; Darren Redmond (25) with an address at 93 Caledon Road, East Wall, Dublin and a fourth man, who cannot be named for legal reasons.
A charge of assault causing harm (S3) to Mr Lunney was struck out against all four defendants. However, they now each stand charged with a more serious charge of assault causing serious harm (S4) to the alleged victim.
The false imprisonment charge against each of the men was also amended to state that they detained Mr Lunney without his consent at Drumbade on that date.
All four were remanded in custody to Castlerea Prison to appear before a sitting of the Special Criminal Court at a future date.
The Special Criminal Court is a juryless criminal court, which tries terrorism and serious organised crime cases.
Father-of-six Mr Lunney was attacked as he made his way home from work on September 17, 2019.
The 50-year-old was later found bleeding and badly injured on an isolated rural roadway at Cornafean.
The maximum term in prison for false imprisonment, if found guilty, is life.
