Motorists caught speeding locally on Slow Down Day
In the first five hours of National Slow Down Day, GoSafe checked the speed of 37,916 vehicles and detected 127 vehicles travelling in excess of the applicable speed limit.
Motorist were detected speeding on roads in Cavan and Monaghan as part of the major national operation launched the as the number of road fatalities to date in 2023 far outstrip those in 2022.
In light of these tragedies the chair of the Road Safety Authority (RSA), Liz O’Donnell has called for a reduction in speed limits.
Examples of high speeds in Cavan and surrounding counties this morning include:
• 76km/h in a 60km/h Zone on the Dublin Road Cavan Cavan
• 74km/h in a 60km/h Zone on the R188 Doocassan Drung Cavan
• 121km/h in a 80km/h Zone on the N2 Drumcaw Monaghan Monaghan
• 155km/h in a 120km/h Zone on the M6 Killavally Tyrrellspass Westmeath
• 146km/h in a 120km/h Zone on the M6 Glen Athlone Westmeath
An Garda Síochána continues to appeal to drivers to comply with speed limits in order to reduce the number of speed related collisions, save lives and reduce injuries on our roads.
