Argos Store closes in Cavan

Argos closed its doors at the Cavan Retail Park for the final time last weekend.

Argos' parent Sainsbury's announced in January their plans to shut the outlets and operations in the Republic of Ireland, while stores in the North would remain open. The retailer, which had operated in the Republic for the past 27 years, said it made the decision following a long period of careful consideration.

The news impacted almost 600 people across 34 sites at the time.

Thirty sites, including Cavan, remained open until 5pm on Saturday, June 24.

Argos offered staff being laid off an enhanced redundancy package, a one-off goodwill payment to those not eligible for redundancy, and furthermore provided a programme of recruitment upskilling and other supports.

Argos has also said it will continue to honour its statutory obligations to customers, and has been working closely with the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC), meaning customers can still contact Argos for help on products purchased in the Republic of Ireland.

They can also contact the company if they have any unspent balance on an Argos Euro Gift Card.

In yet another blow to the Irish retail sector GameStop has confirmed the closure of its 35 Irish stores.

The company once operated more than 50 shops nationwide including one on Connolly Street in Cavan Town, but has steadily winded down its Irish operations over the past decade.

According to its most recent financial statement submitted to the Companies Registration Office, the retailer employed more than 230 people across Ireland in 2022.

Other major retail names to cease trading on the county town’s Main Street include Carphone Warehouse and Ladbrokes bookmakers.
