Cavan loses Top 10 IBAL ranking
Monaghan. is now among the country’s cleanest towns.
Cavan has lost its Top 10 ranking in the latest iteration of the Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) litter league but still remains ‘Clean to European Norms’.
The fall compared to last year’s ranking is a major blow for the town which has managed to repair its reputation within the list of town’s survey in recent years.
Last time out Cavan had climbed to seventh overall, but now the latest publication places Cavan in 12th place, behind Waterford and just ahead of Bray.
The survey presents a snapshot of cleanliness levels across Ireland as the peak summer tourist season commences.
“Cavan just loses out on its top ten spot from last year, but still a very performance, with seven out of the ten sites surveyed getting the top litter grade and just one heavily littered site,” says An Taisce, who carry out the surveys for IBAL. “Top-ranking sites included all the approach roads, the residential area of Farnham Court and the Bring Centre – the latter has seen big improvements over the last little while. ‘Walking History, a tour of Cavan Town’ signage was a feature at the Franciscan Abbey Graveyard. The Main Street was the only seriously littered site.”
Conor Horgan of IBAL says while PPE waste is disappearing from the streets, carelessly disposed of vapes are very much on the rise.
“Not only are they single-use plastic, but the lithium battery within them is an especially toxic form of litter,” said of vapes. “Unfortunately, as is our experience with coffee cups, consumers tend to opt for the convenience of the disposable product. In striving for a circular economy, the case for banning them is a strong one.”
