St Clare’s College celebrates 60 years
St Clare’s College in Ballyjamesduff hosted an evening of entertainment to celebrate its 60th year in education on Tuesday evening of last week, May 9. The special event featured choral and musical performances.
Students Aodhán Collins, Dean Cahill, Emily O’Reilly and Fiachra Skelly, under the direction of Mr John Donohoe, treated the audience to a compelling performance of the play, 'Broken Cups', written by Noel Monahan, former deputy principal. The P.J. O’ Connor award-winning play explores a father-son relationship with mischief, humour and compassion. The performance was dedicated to the memory of Áine Goonan, a member of the original cast of the play in 2001.
The College Choir gave rousing renditions of a variety of popular hits including 'California Dreamin’, 'Mo Ghile Mear' and 'Rocking All Over the World'. The choir was ably directed by Geraldine Cunningham, Ciara Donohoe and John Donohoe.
Third year students, Holly Wheeler and Bevan Smith, told the story of the journey of St Clare’s College from its opening in 1962 with the enrolment of 81 girls. Today, the college is a co-educational school with 630 students, including 24 different nationalities.
