Delays at Cavan Emergency Department as nurses report 18 on trolleys

Public asked to consider alternative treatment options

The general public are being warned of delays at the Emergency Department at Cavan General Hospital and asked not to attend except in cases of real and genuine emergency.

It comes as the latest trolley watch figures from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) reported 18 patients on trolleys in the ED at Cavan General Hospital this morning. They were among 652 patients on trolleys in Irish hospitals this morning.

Following that, hospital management issued a statement this afternoon to media.

It read: 'Our Emergency Department is experiencing high volumes of patients and we would appreciate your support in using alternative pathways eg. GP, Pharmacy etc.

"We are still providing full emergency care if it is required. Thank you for your support.'

The statement was issued in the name of Su-Zann O’Callaghan, General Manager, Cavan & Monaghan Hospital.

Several such appeals have been issued by hospital management at various times in recent months, particularly at the height of the Winter flu season.
