Man accused of Cavan stabbing is denied bail
The man charged after a stabbing incident in Cavan town at the weekend has been denied bail.
Terence McDonagh (33) of 4 Lakeview Terrace, Cavan, is charged with assault causing harm to his uncle, John McDonagh.
Detective Garda Eamonn McCann told Cavan District Court that Gardaí were alerted to a man “bleeding profusely from the head” at around 2.45pm last Saturday (July 9). On arriving at the scene at Townhall Street, they found a man with “large lacerations” to his head.
He was transported to hospital by gardaí as the ambulance service said it could take up to 45 minutes for a unit to respond. Det Gda McCann said medical staff at Cavan General Hospital advised surgery would be needed to treat his injuries.
He said witnesses had reported “a man covered in blood going up town”, prompting a search of the area. John McDonagh alleged to gardaí he had been stabbed by his nephew Terence McDonagh.
Det Gda McCann said gardaí discovered Terence McDonagh at Cavan Bus Station a half hour after the incident with a bag of clothes. He said it was the belief of gardaí that he intended to leave the jurisdiction. He was said to be “intoxicated” at the time of his arrest.
Det Gda McCann said Gardaí had objections to bail, citing a fear Terence McDonagh would leave the jurisdiction, could intimidate witnesses or the injured party and said the knife allegedly used in the incident had not been found.
Sara Brennan BL, acting for Terence McDonagh, asked Det Gda McCann if the injured party had made contact with gardaí and visited Cavan Garda Station to withdraw his complaint.
He denied this, saying that while John McDonagh had visited the garda station, it was to reiterate he wanted to go forward with his complaint.
Sergeant Damien Galligan stepped in, noting it was “strange” the accused knew so much about statements made by the injured party and said it backed up Garda concerns.
Judge Raymond Finnegan denied bail and remanded Terence McDonagh in custody to appear again on July 28 by videolink.
