Corlough church to see the light
A request's been made for additional public lighting outside St Patrick's Church in Corlough.
"It's dark on one side," Fianna Fáil's Sean Smith told a recent meeting of Cavan-Belturbet Municipal District when asking the executive for additional lighting.
Cllr Smith told the meeting that he had raised the plight two years previous, but that he was "still waiting for a resolution" on the matter.
He added that the existing light is "old fashioned" and suggested that one possible solution might be to upgrade what is already there. "There is a real fear that someone might get hurt," said Cllr Smith of the location, which connects the carpark to the nearby bottle-bank.
His motion received support from fellow party member, John Paul Feeley who suggested that the investment would "not be a huge job". It was also supported by Fine Gael's Peter McVitty who noted that the issue had "been on the agenda for a number of years".
He said it was a "dangerous spot" for pedestrians at night.
The motion was supported unanimously.
In response, senior engineer for the Cavan-Belturbet Municipal District area, Paul Mulligan, said he would like to see some form of lighting improvement instigated.
Committing to have an engineer draw up a design and costing for the proposed works, he said "at a minimum" it would see an upgrade to lighting, and "if feasible", the addition of a second one also. He offered also to meet with local parish priest, Fr Sean Maguire, in the hope of progressing matters. "If we do it, it has to be the right job."
