Ms Bergin's daughter was arrested and detained under section four of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at Store Street Garda station, and later appeared before Judge Conal Gibbons at Dublin District Court.
In reply to the murder charge after caution, the court heard Ms Bergin said in Irish: “Sea”.
She was remanded in custody to appear again April 21 for directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions to be obtained.
The judge agreed to direct urgent medical, including psychiatric attention, for the defendant while custody. He further noted that fitness to be tried would arise at a later stage.
