Lough an Leagh asks for public input

Public opinion is being gauged to see how one of the most spectacular vistas in Cavan can be developed in a way that encourages visitors, while maintaining it's unique heritage.

The volunteer group who maintain Lough an Leagh have put together a quick and short survey for local people to hear their views on how best the mountain area can be developed as a local amenity and maintained for local needs and wants.

The group recently received funding to facilitate infrastructural upgrades. Located between Bailieborough and Kingscourt Lough an Leagh Mountain reaches 1,119 feet at its highest point it. It offers spectacular views of the surrounding countryside and on a clear day up to fourteen counties can be seen from the summit.

Last year the group received Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme funding of €19,300 to upgrade the amenity area, meeting and information point and picnic area at the Lough an Leagh beauty spot.

Philip Smith of the Lough an Leagh and Muff Heritage Trust says the spot is one of the most spectacular places in Cavan: “It's one of the most elevated areas in the county. The views you have from it are astonishing. From the place where we have the benches you have a wonderful view along the East coast, from the Mourn Mountains right down to Dublin.”

There are three burial cairns on the site. The peak of the mountain affords a spectacular view: “At the burial cairn at the top you can see 360°. There is a local song that says you can see from Connemara down, around to Wicklow and on to Sliabh Bloom.”
