A trainee Garda from Carrickmacross is to posthumously receive a Scott Medal today.
Gary Sheehan was a trainee Garda when he was shot dead during the rescue of Don Tidey in 1983.
He was three months into his training in Templemore.
The Quinnsworth Executive was kidnapped from outside his home in Dublin and held hostage for 23 days.
Gary Sheehan (23) was part of the team sent to Drumcroman Woods in Derrada on the Cavan-Leitrim border.
He and Defence Forces Private Patrick Kelly were shot dead during the rescue.
He’ll today receive a Gold medal for bravery, the highest honour that can be bestowed on a Garda.
Garda Commissioner Drew Harris will present 15 Scott Medals today to Gardaí involved in the rescue operation and investigation.
