Water warnings lifted in Dernakesh and Kilsherdany

Supply now safe for consumption

'Do Not Consume' notices have been lifted on two local water schemes with immediate effect.

They concern the Dernakesh Group Water Scheme and the Kilsherdany Group Water Scheme.

Cavan County Council has issued updates in respect of both in the last hour following consultation with the Health Services Executive.

In respect of both schemes, a spokesperson for the council said: "The water is now safe for use and can be used for drinking and food preparation."

The Dernakesh scheme serves around 360 customers including households, businesses and farms.

The 'Do Not Consume' notice issued after samples showed elevated levels of Manganese leaving the treatment plant and in the network. The drinking water quality was therefore considered to be “significant compromised” and an “immediate risk” to the public's health.

Water supplies on both schemes are now deemed safe for consumption.

The local authority also advises: "If your internal/domestic water system has been in general use throughout the period of the notice, you may now use your water supply as normal. If water systems have not been in use for the duration of the notice, consumers should ensure that they flush out their systems by running their hot and cold taps for a period of at least 30 minutes before resuming normal use of the water supply."
