Cavan sons team up for Cavan Day

It's understood that the London-based Cusack made contact with Bailieborough's SoSU and has done a four-track EP of remixes of songs from the album, with his take on 'Polaris' to be officially launched in celebration of Cavan Day.

Pete Briquette of Boomtown Rats fame and the lads from Sons of Southern Ulster have teamed up to promote Cavan Day 2020.

Ballyjamesduff-native Patrick Martin Cusack, aka 'Pete Briquette' has remixed the track 'Polaris' from the SoSU's critically acclaimed new album, 'Sinners and Lost Souls'.

It's understood Eoin Devereaux who manages SoSU sent a copy of the new album to the London-based Cusack, who in turn made contact with Bailieborough band. Devereaux knew Cusack from having taken part in a Boomtown Rats documentary, filmed for RTÉ and the BBC.

The resulting outcome was that Cusack was so enamoured with SoSU's release that in homage he made contact with the band and completed a four-track EP of remixes of songs from the album.

His take on 'Polaris' has been officially launched in celebration of Cavan Day, with the song now available for purchase from SoSU's Bandcamp page, and set to go live on Youtube at a minute past midnight on September 26.

“We want to release the remix of Polaris as a taster of the EP for Cavan Day,” SoSU told The Anglo-Celt. “It's brilliant that Pete and us lot from Bailieboro are collaborating - it'll resonate with folk for Cavan Day.”

A renowned bassist, record producer and composer, Cusack was the only Boomtown Rats member who frequently collaborated with singer Bob Geldof as a solo artist.

SoSU are vocalist Justin Kelly, now living in Boston and guitarist David Meagher, both former members of The Panic Merchants who regularly featured on Dave Fanning’s Rock Show in the 1980s; drummer Noel ‘Skinhammer’ Larkin, and bassist Paddy Glackin, Western Australia.

'Saints and Sinners' comes five years after the purveyors of post-punk left an indelible mark on the Irish music scene with with their debut album ‘Foundry Folk Songs’ (2015).

Interest in their first album prompted the band to play live, with a short Irish tour involving a packed out gig back on hometurf, at the Bailieborough Arts & Cultural Centre in August 2017.

It's been a busy 12-months for SoSU following the release of 'Saints and Sinners', which sold out its first full print run.

Songs from the album have received healthy radio play having been championed by various DJs in both Ireland and the UK, while sales of the 'Saints and Sinners' are mapped globally, with orders from the US, Australia and New Zealand, and a particularly strong following in Germany and Holland also.

The band are also putting the finishing touches ahead of releasing the album on vinyl in the not too distant future. Test pressings arrived last week for 'Saints and Sinners', and SoSU hope to follow it up with a vinyl release of ‘Foundry Folk Songs’ too.
