Arms dump found near Det Gda Donohoe murder scene
Gardai have found a dissident arms dump close to the murder scene of Kilnaleck native Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe.
On Monday afternoon, as part of an ongoing operation targeting dissident Republican activities, searches led special garda units to Jenkinstown, Co Louth, just kilometres away from Lordship Credit Union, where Det Gda Donohoe was killed when protecting a cash transfer.
Dissident Republicans have links to those involved the murder of the father-of-two and a blanket of fear is protecting those responsible and preventing others from coming forward in the north Louth-south Armagh area.
Armed detectives and local gardai, assisted by the Garda Dog Unit, searched “lands and dwellings” at Jenkinstown and discovered an arms cache containing AK47 machine guns, a sniper rifle, ammunition and a sniper rifle buried at the site.
Gardai have not yet arrested anyone in connection with the find and it is not yet known how long the arsenal had been buried. The Army were called to make safe the explosive devices.
“During the course of the searches to date a number of items suspected of being component parts of Improvised Explosive Devices have been located,” said a Garda spokesperson. “As a result of this find the services of the Army Explosive Ordinance Disposal Team have been requested and are in attendance. A quantity of ammunition has also been recovered.”
Det Gda Donohoe was murdered when a gang of five, who are still on the run, robbed Lordship Credit Union, Jenkinstown, in January of 2016.
Two men were arrested in relation to the murder but later released without question and not thought to be part of the gang at the scene on the night of Det Gda Donohoe’s murder.
Members of the gang it is understood fled to the US and Australia, some of which have now returned.
