Hospital's CJD procedures need reviewing
A review of hospital procedures regarding surgery and CJD was called for by a local TD in light of the discovery that potentially CJD-infected instruments had been used on patients at Dublin's Beaumont Hospital.
“It is very distressing for people who have had surgery at Beaumont Hospital to learn that, for some, there is a danger of potential CJD infection,' said Deputy Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin.
“It is worrying that the CJD infection of the original patient in question only came to light after surgery, and so the standard procedure for special sterilisation of potentially CJD-infected instruments was not used.
“The Minister for Health should ask HIQA to initiate an immediate review of hospital procedures regarding CJD. Full information should be given to all Beaumont patients who may be affected by this issue.'
