Book on 1920s' conflict settles dispute over Clones station deaths
The author of a new book believes he has finally settled a long running dispute over who shot first in a notorious incident at Clones Railway Station and which claimed the lives of an IRA commandant and five British militia. It was just one of a litany of such killings during the turbulent and largely overlooked period of history which has finally been scruitinised by historian Pearse Lawlor in his fascinating new book - The Outrages 1920-1922. Pearse, whose previous book The Burnings 1920 was a huge success, has documented the countless attacks in rural Ulster which occurred during the violent birth of the two states. Many of the incidents involved IRA men from Cavan and neighbouring counties, and some take place in the county. Full story on page 48 of The Anglo-Celt.
