Blow for minors as midfielder McGovern ruled out

Cavan minors have been dealt a huge blow with the news that midfielder Greg McGovern has been ruled out for six to eight weeks with a broken foot.

The towering Swanlinbar man, who had been in fine form in the wins over Armagh and Fermanagh, sustained the injury in training with the county team last Friday night. McGovern, ironically a cousin of injured Swad and Cavan midfielder Gearoid McKiernan, turned 18 this week.

His loss will be an equally difficult pill to swallow for his club team. The St Mary’s, already reeling from the absence of McKiernan, are now down another key midfielder, although they received a boost with the return to the country this week of former county minor forward Mark Cunningham.

Cunningham’s older brother John is also available again suspension, while Michael Curran has returned from the UK and is back training with the team.

Cavan will enter their Ulster MFC semi-final as underdogs against Monaghan, who won the Ulster League – beating the Breffni boys en route – and kicked 4-20 in a quarter-final rout of Antrim.
