Gardaí investigating thefts from gravesides in Bailieborough and Meath have recovered flower pots and are appealing for owners to get in contact, however one east Cavan church affected has been forced to install CCTV.
Last week, the thefts of sentimental flower pots from three graves in St Anne’s Cemetery was highlighted by local priest Fr Michael Router and Kevin Carolan from Bailieborough’s Community Text Alert scheme on the front page of this paper.
Fr Router says that the parish has had to contact a security firm to install surveillance cameras at the church. “We’re putting up CCTV cameras to keep an eye on things in light of the recent thefts and also in case there might be any other matters that we need to look at, anti-social behaviour and so on, we might need to monitor that,” he said.
In last week’s Celt, Fr Router lamented that even sentimental graveside offerings could be stolen, “if you don’t nail things down”. He urged people to engrave the family name or that of the deceased on items placed at the resting place of loved ones.
Mr Carolan put up a text alert sign at the cemetery to after as a deterrent to “thugs” after one of the graves had eight pots taken from it and wondered “how low could anyone go?”
Recovered
However, gardaí in Navan are now looking for owners for items recovered on Friday, July 17, as part of investigations into the Bailieborough, Navan, Clonee and Maynooth, Co Kildare, thefts and say that a man will appear in a Meath District Court this week. They posted a number of items on the 'Meath Crime Prevention’ Facebook page and can be contacted at 046-9021445.
