Official Cavan Monaghan figures
Cavan Monaghan mustered 41.85% of its voting public to cast their ballot in the 2018 Presidential election and referendum. The support for the incumbent may have lagged behind the national average, but it was still a resounding affirmation for the candidate.
The final figures was released after the spoiled votes were adjudicated over. The only agents on hand to contest the spoils was from the Higgin’s campaign.
The spoiled votes were in three categories: writing on the ballot paper, unmarked or no clear preference and multiple first preference marks.
The metronomic thud of the rubber stamp that marked a red 'rejected' across the unacceptable ballots was consistent as none of the votes were contested.
Many of the 603 spoiled votes were marked in protest, the most frequent were related to abortion with Gemma O'Doherty also making an appearance on many papers.
The final official total electorate was announced as 91,692, with the turnout hiting 38,376 ( 41.85%). The candidates confirmed shares were: Casey 7,023 (18.59%), Duffy 1,000 (2.65%), Freeman 6,771 (17.93%), Higgins 16,749 (44.34%) and Ni Riada 4,167 (11.03%).
With the numbers sent to Dublin for compilation into the national figure attention in Drumalee now turns to the counting of the Referendum votes.
