Over €160K allocated to improve walking trails in Cavan and Monaghan

Cavan County Council has been allocated €45,567 for improvement works on the 'Cavan Way' walking trail, which runs from Blacklion to Dowra.

The funding was announced by the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Heather Humphreys, today (Friday). The Cavan Monaghan Fine Gael TD also confirmed that her department is providing €115,935 for upgrade and development works in Rossmore Forest Park in Monaghan.

Speaking today, Minister Humphreys said: 'This recreational funding is very important in terms of supporting tourism and improving local amenities. Significant funding of more than €115,000 is being provided for Rossmore Forest Park in Monaghan, for upgrading and development works.

'Monaghan County Council will be working with Coillte to upgrade the existing Lake Walk, install new Heritage interpretation signage, and develop a new trail which will facilitate access to the original site of Rossmore castle. These works will greatly enhance what is already a very popular local amenity.

 “In Cavan, funding of €45,567 is being provided to the County Council for the Cavan Way, which runs from Blacklion to Dowra. This funding will be used to carry out improvement works on seven different sections of the trail between Dowra and Cavan Burren Park, and between Blacklion and West Cavan, which will improve the quality of the trail surface. This is fantastic news as walking forms a key component of the tourism strategy for Cavan.

“The recreational funding being provided will enhance both of these popular local amenities, which is positive for both the local people who use them, and it is also very positive as we constantly seek to improve our tourism offering. I look forward to both projects being completed without delay.”
