Man dies and garda injured in Blayney incident

 

A man has died and a garda is being treated in hospital for facial, head and leg injuries following and incident in the town of Castleblaney, Co. Monaghan last night.

A man in his 40s has been arrested and is currently in custody following the incident, which occurred after a Garda had attempted to stop a silver Audi A6 close to Castleblaney Garda Station shortly before 11.30pm on Tuesday, November 27.

However, the silver-coloured Audi drove off, dragging the member of An Garda Siochana for about 500 metres, before crashing into another car, a Skoda Octavia, on Main Street.

The driver of the Skoda, a man in his 40s, was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene.

His body has been taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital Drogheda where a post mortem examination will be carried out by the State Pathologist.

The garda meanwhile, a man in his late 20s, is being treated for facial, head and leg injuries, also at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.

The driver of the silver Audi is currently being detained at Carrickmacross Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

The road at Main Street is presently closed to facilitate an examination of the area by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and Crime Scene Examiners.
