Man due in court over weekend assault

A 27-year-old man is to appear before Cavan District Court this morning in connection with a serious assault on another man at a house party held to watch the Conor McGregor UFC fight at the weekend.

The victim of the alleged assault sustained serious head injuries at the party which occurred at a house in the village of Oram, outside Castleblaney, in the early hours of Sunday morning last.

The man in custody was arrested in Co Monaghan on Tuesday afternoon.

He had been detained following his arrest at Castleblayney Garda Station, pending his appearance before Cavan District Court.

The victim, a married man with four children, remains in a critical condition.

He understood to be receiving ongoing medical treatment in intensive care unit at Beaumont Hospital.
