Scattered snowfall across Cavan

It's not quite the winter storms some may have had you believe were on the way, but people across Cavan still woke up to reports of smatterings of snow in some parts of the county this morning.

Along with reports of snow on some higher ground to the west of the county, there was minor snowfall reported from Ballyconnell to Ballyhaise, where temperatures dropped to close to freezing overnight.

National weather service Met Eireann is forecasting that tonight will be cold, with lowest temperatures falling to between zero and +3 degrees and some frost in places.

The outlook for the weekend meanwhile sees temperatures of 5 to 10 degrees, with coolest being in the northern half of the country on Saturday, followed by a frosty Sunday night that will turn cooler going into next week with a spell of rain later Monday clearing to scattered wintry showers.

“It will turn very cold on Sunday night under clear skies and just light variable breezes. Lowest temperatures will fall to between zero and minus 4 degrees with a widespread sharp frost,” says the weather service.
Met Eireann adds: “Monday will be cold day and frost will only slowly clear in the morning. Moderate southwesterly winds will freshen ahead of a band of rain pushing into western areas in the afternoon and quickly spreading eastwards during the evening. The rain will turn to sleet or snow in parts of the north as top temperatures reach only 3 or 4 degrees there and elsewhere afternoon temperatures will be just 5 to 7 degrees.”
