Spoiled votes don't spoil SF party

It will be little more than a footnote in the story of the 2020 election, but Cavan Monaghan's level of spoiled votes is a bit of an anomaly.

Clocking in at 695 the number was twice the national average. Officers overseeing the number of spoiled votes said that over 50 votes were not correctly stamped at the polling stations rendering them invalid. There were also a significant amount of votes that went to Sinn Fein candidates that had marked a “1” and the other and “x” again rendering them invalid.

The spoiled votes are always an opportunity for a gesture and this was the case in one ballot paper that had 'Paul Quinn RIP, a loving son, not a political football' printed on the margin.
