Snow plays havoc with Confirmation plans

Plans by families to celebrate Confirmations in the Diocese of Kilmore this weekend have been thrown into disarray as a result of the severe snowfalls and strong winds resulting from Storm Emma blowing across the region.

The Anglo-Celt understands that the ceremony of the Sacrament of Confirmation, as planned in Laragh, will now not go ahead. Instead, ceremony, which had been due to take place later today, March 2 at 6pm, had been rescheduled to take place next week, albeit without the presence of Bishop of Kilmore, the Most Reverend Philip Leo O'Reilly.

Meanwhile, against the expressed wishes of some parents, Confirmation is still expected to take place at the Cathedral of Saint Patrick and Saint Felim on Saturday, March 3, from 12 noon.

Students from schools at Farnham National School, Crubany at Killygarry, St Feilim’s NS, and Drumcrave NS are all scheduled to make their Confirmations tomorrow.

Confirmation for students at schools located in the parish of Killann in Bailieborough is at present still going ahead on Sunday, March 4.

The weather outlook for the weekend, according to Met Eireann, is Saturday will be mostly cloudy day with outbreaks of sleet expected widely, but still with the chance of snowfalls over high ground and in the north. “Precipitation increasingly as rain by afternoon. Fresh east winds. Highest temperatures ranging from 2 in the north to 6 or 7 degrees in the far south.”

The cold weather is expected to continue through the rest of the weekend with highest temperatures during Sunday only around 2 to 4 degrees. “There will be a good deal of dry weather across the south of the country but wintry showers or some showery rain will affect more northern counties. Widespread frost overnight.”
