Teen girl required 300 stitches after machete attack in Lisnaskea
A teenage girl is said to have used her own body as a shield to protect an 11-month-old infant when she was critically injured by a machete-wielding gang that attacked a house in Fermanagh at the weekend.
Relatives of the girl (13) say she had to receive 300 stitches to her wound and suffered a collapsed lung. Her condition is now described as stable.
The Police Service in Northern Ireland (PSNI) are investigating the incident, which occurred just after 9pm last Saturday night, November 16, when masked intruders entered a house at Trasna Way in Lisnaskea.
It’s understood the 13-year-old girl was caring for an infant child at the time the gang of up to three men broke into the property.
The young girl received serious stab wounds to her back and was later taken for emergency treatment to Enniskillen’s South West Acute Hospital. A video circulated on social media after the attack showed the teenager holding a towel to her chest, and includes graphic images of her injuries, which include a deep wound on her back.
A 41-year-old woman, also present in the house, suffered injuries to her leg. She was later discharged from hospital.
The baby boy, who is understood to be the teenage girl’s nephew, was unharmed.
It is understood the attack may be linked to an ongoing Traveller feud between families living in the north midlands area and north of the Border.
Police say they are investigating several lines of inquiry and have appealed to anyone with information to contact detectives in Enniskillen.
No arrests have been made but the matter is now being treated by authorities in the north as attempted murder.
Furthermore, the attack has been widely condemned.
Detective Sergeant Keith Monaghan confirmed: “Police received a report at around 9.15pm that a number of males, armed with machetes, had forced entry to a house and attacked two female occupants. A 13-year-old girl sustained serious stab wounds as a result and was taken to hospital where she remains in a critical but stable condition.
“A 41-year-old woman was also treated for stab wounds to her leg but has since been discharged from hospital. A baby was also present at the scene but was thankfully unharmed.”
Det Sgt Monaghan added: “This must have been a terrifying ordeal for those involved and we are determined to find the men responsible. We have several lines of enquiry, which we are progressing at this time but I would ask anyone with information or who noticed any suspicious activity in the area to contact detectives in Enniskillen and pass that information on.”
