Public warned of 'emergency services' scam

Local gardaí have issued a community alert in response to reports of suspicious activity where persons are alleged to be pretending to act as members of the emergency services.

The alert states: “Please be aware of individuals calling door to doors pretending to be members of the emergency services. Please report any suspicious activity to your local Gardaí.”

There have been a number of reports of suspicious activity in recent times. Last week businesses in Cavan were being asked to remain vigilant following the discovery of counterfeit money fraudsters in the county.

Yesterday evening, gardai issued a statement to make the public aware of the possibility for fraudsters “exploiting” the spread of Covid-19 Coronavirus to carry out scams either online or in person.

“The main types of scams include Phisihng, Social Engineering Scams and Fraudulent Selling/Trading,” the garda spokesperson said.

The add that if anyone has been approached in such a manner to contact their local garda station immediately.
