Essential events guide for this weekend

Trad for Trócaire 2012 is one of the many highlights of this weekend's ents line-up in Cavan and surrounds. This Sunday, October 7 and Cavan Comhaltas branch are aiming for a record breaking Imperial Cavan sessions to mark Trad for Trócaire this Sunday. Session for everyone downstairs 4-6pm - dancers, singers, and older musicians are all welcome. From 4-5pm under 13; and over 13 from 5.10-6pm. There's no cover charge, and all donations go for Trocaire . Adult trad session Where: Flynn's Bar, Belturbet When: Friday, October 5 What: An adult trad session. Historic talk Where: Lakeside Manor Hotel, Dublin Road When: Friday, October 5, 8pm What: As part of Virginia 400 Celebrations talks by Mr Eugene Markey on the Ancient Order of Hibernians, and by Mr Jack Johnston of the Clogher Historical Society on the Orange Order. Also features exhibits of The Orange Order and The Ancient Order of Hibernians paraphenalia kindly given on loan by the County Cavan Museum, Ballyjamesduff. Art Auction Where: Virginia Rugby Club When: Friday, October 5, 10pm What: Previewing of the paintings on day from 3-9pm at Virginia Rugby Club. Complimentary wine and cheese will be served; music interlude from students of Virginia College. 20% of sales will go towards the rugby club's development. Buses depart from Cross at 8am and from Main St, Mullagh at 8.15am. Bus €10 p/p. Climb route level is intermediate and takes about three hours, allowing for breaks. Lunch at 3.30pm approximately, arriving back in Mullagh at 7.30pm. Coffee day Where: Ballinagh When: Saturday, October 6, 11am-4pm What: In aid of Cystic Fibrosis (Cavan Branch) by group of locals participating in Dublin City Marathon (Rosie Mulligan, Olivia and Frankie Mulligan, David Donohoe, Michelle Beard, Carmel Murray, Susan Mulligan, Angela Sheridan and Linda Hyland) in Donnacha and Teresa McSorley's house (just before Ardkill Place coming out of Ballinagh) in conjunction with Run DMC 4 CF (Run Dublin Marathon Challenge for Cystic Fibrosis). All proceeds to providing necessary facilities in Cavan General Hospital in order to treat CF patients. Tribute to the Stars Where: St Michael's Hall, Cootehill When: Saturday, October 6 What: Cootehill Cancer Support Group host a tribute to the stars night, Frank Sinatra, Tom Jones, Ingelbert Humperdinck, Neil Diamond, Garth Brooks and many more. Music by Maine & Guests plus local artists from 8.30pm. Admission tickets bought at door; €7 children. All proceeds to Cootehill Cancer Support group. Car Boot Sale Where: St Aidan's Comprehensive School, Cootehill When: Saturday, October 6 What: Car boot sale runs from 7am-2pm. €10 per vehicle. Traditional Singing Where: The Market House, Blacklion When: Sunday 7 October, 5-8pm What: A traditional singing session. Special guest Aoife Murray. All singers listeners and storytellers welcome, admission free. Cycles Where: Castlerahan When: Sunday, October 7 What: 35k Cycle Challenge starting at Castlerahan Community Grounds at 11.30am - fast route so if you feel like testing yourself against the best this is your ideal event. Cyclists from VTCC, Moynalty Cycling Club, TC Racing Oldcastle will attend. Funds to further develop the playing field and community centre. There is also an 8k family loop to encourage families to participate. Individual entry is €20 for 35k challenge and family rate is €10 per adult, €5 per child capped at €25 per family. Family walk Where: Ballybay Wetlands Centre When: Sunday, October 7 from 3-5pm What: Monaghan Sports Partnership have organised a family walk day and a guided nature walk of the wetlands. During the afternoon there will also be balloon modelling, face painting and light refreshments served in the centre. Cost is just €2 per person or €5 for a family. Coffee morning Where: Parish Centre, Castlepollard When: Sunday, October 7 What: Coffee morning/cake sale in aid of Finea parish, following 11.30am Mass. The committee would be delighted to accept buns, cakes, tarts, etc on Saturday afternoon from 2-6pm delivered to the centre. Playground Opening Where: Killanny, Co Monaghan When: Sunday, October 7, 2-6pm What: Killanny Playground Committee presents the official opening of the parish playground. A family day for all our parish and surrounding parishes. Bouncy castles for all ages, BBQ and sweet shop on the day also, games, raffles and music. All proceeds of the day will be used to reduce the outstanding loan of €33,000. Entrance fee €5 per adult and children free.
