Male (50's) arrested over Lunney abduction
A man aged in his 50's has been arrested in connection with the ongoing investigation into the abduction and attack on Quinn Industrial Holdings Director Kevin Lunney.
The male, The Anglo-Celt understands, was arrested in the Mullahoran area of Co Cavan earlier this morning. He is currently being detained at Cavan Garda Station under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act 2007.
An arrest under Section 50 allows for Gardai to hold a person in detention for a total of seven days (168 hours), with an initial period of six hours.
A spokesperson for An Garda Siochana issued a statment: "A male, aged in his mid-50s, has been arrested today, 12th March 2020, in relation to the abduction and assault of Mr. Kevin Lunney which occurred on 17th September 2019. The man is currently detained in Cavan Garda Station under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act, 2007."
It is the latest arrest, bringing to five the number of those detained for questioning on both sides of the border, since the turn of the year.
Four people were arrested in connection with the ongoing investigation earlier this month as part of a cross-border investigation
That included two men and a woman arrested by PSNI detectives in Co Fermanagh.
All three have been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to kidnap, conspiracy to cause grievous bodily harm with intent and assisting offenders.
They were questioned at Omagh Police Station but later released without charge.
The fourth person arrested was a man in his 30s in the Cavan area.
He too had been held at Cavan Garda Station, and again was later released without charge.
At the time Chief Superintendent John O'Reilly of the Cavan Monaghan Garda Division said the arrests are a further “significant step” the perpetrators of the attack on dad-of-six Mr Lunney will be brought to justice.
Mr Lunney was abducted on his way home from work on September 17. He was severely beaten and left on the side of a rural roadway near Cornafean.
Four other men have been charged in relation to that attack and are currently before the courts.
