FROM THE ARCHIVE: Kingscourt win Minor Championship in 1982
Our archive photograph dates from September 1982 and shows the Kingscourt captain John Martin and his team-mates celebrating following their win in the Minor Championship final against Annagh.
The Stars won the match on a scoreline of 1-6 to 0-4.
The report on the game in the Celt noted:
“Kingscourt club gained a great boost for the future when their minor side won the championship crown at the expense of Annagh at Breffni Park on Sunday last in the curtain-raiser to the senior final [won by Laragh United].
“While the standard might not have been on a par with previous deciders, there was plenty of endeavour and all that was missing was accuracy by the forwards.
“Kingscourt made the breakthrough in the second half when in the 16th minute, a mistake by the Annagh defence was duly punished when right half-forward Mark Kelly sent to the net.
“Despite their best efforts subsequently, Annagh were unable to make a real impression.”
The Kingscourt team and scorers was: Mark Howe, Brendan O’Reilly, Tom Roonery, Michael Farrelly, Joe Gargan, Brendan Kane (0-1), Peter Rooney, John Martin, Tommy McKeon, Mark Kelly (1-0), Pat Owens (0-1), Adrian Carolan (0-2), Frankie Sheridan, Paul Leahy (0-1), Thomas McHGaghan
