Crime news in brief

Here are some crime stories from gardaí across Cavan and Monaghan over the past week. IF you can assist in any of the investigations, please call them in confidence.

 

Drugs seized
A quantity of drugs, believed to be cannabis herb, were seized at a house in the Ballyconnell area at the weekend. Gardaí from Ballyconnell, accompanied by members of the Detective Branch, searched the property under warrant on Sunday last, April 12. There they discovered cannabis contained in a number of glass jars, subject to analysis.

A male, aged in his 30s, was arrested at the scene but later released without charge. A file is being prepared for the DPP.

Woman was going to Asda

A woman from the east of Cavan was stopped just short of the Border by members of An Garda Síochána as she attempted to travel North to Asda in Enniskillen.

The woman was reminded of the current pandemic restrictions and directed to return home. It comes as gardaí are being contacted for the purpose of issuing “permits” for travel reasons.
A spokesperson took to social media to clarify the situation: 'Firstly we are unable to issue permits and secondly the essential reasons for travel are set out in the government guidelines. Drug drivers
Gardaí in Cavan continue to apprehend motorists driving under the influence of drugs.
On Monday morning last, April 13, gardaí from received a report that a car had been stolen a short time earlier from the Lisnaskea area of Co Fermanagh. At 11:20am, the vehicle was intercepted by a local unit a short distance from Cavan Town.
Two occupants, a male and a female, both aged in their 40s, were arrested and subsequently brought to Cavan Garda Station.
An oral fluid test on the driver also proved positive for opiates.

In an unrelated incident, on Thursday last week, April 9, a car was stopped by gardaí, again in Cavan. Two male occupants were on board and the driver was in breach of the Road Traffic Act. He was arrested on suspicion of drug driving and tested positive for both opiates and cannabis.
The car had no valid NCT, insurance nor tax disc displayed and was seized.

 

 

Gardaí warn of tool thefts

With many work sites across the region currently shut due to restrictions, An Garda Síochána is warning property owners to be vigilant for the potential theft of tools and machinery.
A garda spokesperson posted on social media that in recent weeks there has been a number of thefts from vacant building sites of scaffolding, power tools, plant machinery.
