New town and village signage

The issue of "shabby" town signage in "some" towns in the Ballyjamesduff Municipal District was discussed at last week's meeting.

Cllr Trevor Smith (FG) said the signage was in a "shabby" state "as you go in" to some towns and asked if there was a scheme for new signs.

He mentioned Mountnugent, which had applied for funding, and said Crosskeys also wants new signage.

Cllr Winston Bennett (FG) said there was "talk" a few years ago about "standardised" signage for the towns and villages.

Senior Executive Officer, John Donohoe, said there are two elements to signage for towns and villages - threshold signs with the 'This is Cavan' logo and town signage.

On the former, he said the council are "in the process" of creating them, however he added "it's very complex".

"You should see them up by the end of this year," he said.

The council has also "set about the process" of revitalising the town signs. A pilot scheme for the project includes one village, Mountnugent, and one town, which is Bailieborough.

The council will "then launch a scheme for towns and villages to apply". However Mr Donohoe cautioned that they "won't have funding for every sign".

"It'll take a couple of years," he pointed out.

People driving through towns and villages can expect signs to have the same layout as the present ones with both Irish and English and an "option" for a town tagline.

"That'll [the tagline] be decided by the community," he added.

Cllr Shane P O'Reilly (II) pointed out that "some of our village signs have got very tired".

Cllr Winston Benett (FG) welcomed the news.
