Inspection plan for domestic waste water treatment systems
The National Inspection Plan outlines there are 33 inspections of domestic wastewater treatment systems or septic tanks required in County Cavan across three risk zones ranging from high risk to low risk.
In 2025, the 33 inspections in County Cavan have now commenced. Letters and information leaflets are sent to the relevant homeowners 10 days in advance of the inspection with the day and time of the proposed inspection. The inspection can be re-arranged to suit the homeowner once contact is made with the Council to reschedule.
The Inspector will check that the domestic wastewater treatment system or septic tank is not a risk to public health or the environment.
Homeowners with domestic wastewater treatment systems or septic tanks are required by law to:
Register their system with ‘Protect Our Water’ www.protectourwater.ie
Ensure their system is not a risk to human health or the environment and complies with regulations.
Not impede Inspectors; and
Comply with an advisory notice if the system fails inspection.
