Whistleblower welcomes High Court order

X, owned by billionaire Elon Musk, must now provide the identity of this individual to Mr Winters by April 15.

An order compelling X, formerly Twitter, to reveal the identity of a person behind an anonymous social media account used to “mount reputational attacks” has been welcomed by former garda and whistleblower, John Wilson.

Last week solicitor Kevin Winters obtained an order before the High Court in Belfast to reveal information about who operated the now disbanded ‘Malachy O’ account.

X, owned by billionaire Elon Musk, must now provide the identity of this individual to Mr Winters by April 15.

In August 2023, five people, including garda whistleblower John Wilson, sought orders requesting Twitter, as it was then known, to provide date of registration for the account as well as Internet Protocol (IP) information.

In his action Mr Winters also claims the same anonymous account targeted and defamed his own legal practice, KRW Law.

Further possible legal action may arise from any disclosure.

“I want to reiterate what my solicitor Kevin Winters said - that using anonymous social media accounts to mount reputational attacks is a coward’s charter,” said Mr Wilson speaking to The Anglo-Celt this week.

“I’ll be in a better position to comment after this Belfast High Court order has been complied with.”
