Escalation notice issued for Cavan ED
20 on trolleys today according to INMO. Increased in winter vomiting cases.
Cavan General Hospital’s Emergency Department is currently experiencing significantly high levels of activity and is in escalation caused by the winter vomiting bug.
The latest update was provided by HSE Dublin & North East, and comes a day after 31 patients were recorded as on trolleys according to the INMO. That's the highest number so far this year.
There are 20 people on trolleys today (Tuesday).
There has been an increased number of patient presentations, including a notable rise in gastroenteritis (suspected Norovirus) related cases.
"Norovirus is a highly contagious virus that causes gastroenteritis, leading to symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea, nausea, and stomach cramps. The outbreak has been confirmed in multiple locations, and we urge healthcare providers and the public to take necessary precautions to prevent further spread," said a HSE spokesperson.
"In this regard, we would encourage the public to attend the Emergency Department for emergencies only at this time and would advise people to contact their GP or GP Out of Hours services in the first instance. We are still providing full emergency care if it is required."
The Minor Injuries Unit at Monaghan Hospital meanwhile is open from 8am to 8pm daily. By attending the GP, Pharmacy or injury unit if you can, will help alleviate pressures in the Emergency Department.
"Hospital management would like to acknowledge the hard work, commitment and dedication of all staff."
