Memorable music for your big day

A chance encounter and a one-day performance, that’s how a Belturbet postman began a new wedding singing career with a Cavan music teacher.

MC Wedding Music, owned by Michael Meehan and Carmel McGearty, is an award-winning wedding ceremony and drinks reception performance duo, winning the Let’s Talk Weddings Highly Commended award last year. The award was achieved thanks to an abundance of positive reviews from delighted couples.

The pair have been evoking emotion from congregations for three years, effortlessly playing the bride down the aisle to her favourite song bringing tears of pure happiness. After the ceremony, guests can expect to enjoy their drinks reception to the soundtrack of upbeat tunes floating among the giddy chatter of guests.

Each wedding performance is curated especially for the bride and groom, who select their favourites prior to the big day and send them to Michael and Carmel. They send out a list of options for couples to choose from, however if a desired song is not there, Michael and Carmel are only too happy to practice and perfect the piece beforehand.

“If we don’t know it, we’ll go and learn it for them and have it ready for the wedding day,” Michael assured.

Music teacher Carmel has 16 years’ experience playing at weddings, honing her craft on various instruments such as the keyboard and the violin. Postman Michael’s voice harmonises perfectly with her music, blending to create the perfect, bubbly and memorable atmosphere.

“It’s whatever the bride and groom want and hymns for the church and stuff like that,” Michael outlined.

“Then the drinks reception is more of a hearty feeling, creating a relaxing atmosphere for the guests coming in,” he said, adding that they could be performing “anything” from Michael Bublé to The Cranberries.

“We cater for all,” he said, outlining how recently they have had an enquiry to play all Irish folk music at the second day of a wedding.

Michael, who is known along the Drumlane post route as ‘The Singing Postman’, began this venture three years ago when his mother, who works in Loreto College Cavan, was approached by Carmel to see if her son would be interested in singing at a wedding. Previously he had been singing in the local choir as a hobby, but “hadn’t been singing publicly” aside from those who happened to hear him humming as he delivered the mail.

“Singing in the post van was what I was normally doing,” he laughed.

Agreeing, Michael sang at his first wedding in Laragh five years ago. It was soon after a colleague suggested he sing at weddings on a more regular basis. He contacted Carmel about performing together regularly who, in turn, was delighted with the decision and so MC Wedding Music was born.

“It took off thankfully,” he added.

They have travelled country-wide with their music and plan to continue doing so, as the duo has continue to be a massive hit among audiences.

“So far over the three years, we’ve lots of five-star reviews on our Instagram and our Facebook so it’s going well. We’ve lots of emails and text messages to thank us.”
