Man remains in custody as murder investigation continues

A man remains in custody this evening as gardaí continue to investigate the murder of a woman at her home in West Cavan last night.
A male (60's) who suffered serious injuries during the same domestic incident is still at Cavan General Hospital where he remains in a “serious but stable condition”.
The house at Derrycassan lane in the townland of Kilnavart west of Ballyconnell is still sealed off this evening.
Members of the garda forensic unit arrived earlier this afternoon.
The body of the woman (50's) was found after officers were alerted to what is understood to have been an alleged stabbing incident at approximately 9.30pm on Saturday night, January 11.
A man (30's) was arrested at a “separate location” to the house.
He is believed to have travelled to Ballyconnell town by car and entered a local takeaway premises, after which the alarm was raised.
The county coroner was informed and the woman's body was conveyed to Cavan General Hospital this morning (Sunday, January 12) for post-mortem examination.
The male (30's) is still being detained pursuant to Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984, at a Garda Station in the Cavan area. Being treated as “murder”, gardaí are not looking for anyone else in relation to the matter.
They have set up an incident room to investigate the killing and house attack at Cavan Garda Station.
A Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) and Family Liaison Officer (FLO) have since been appointed.
Garda in meantime have launched a public appeal for information. That includes anyone who travelled in the area of Kilnavert of Ballyconnell last night, Saturday, January 11, between 8.30pm and 9.30pm.
