Some school openings delayed due to weather

Orange weather warning in effect until 10am.

Some schools across Cavan delayed their openings today until the Orange status weather warning for low temperatures and icy conditions had passed. For a list of closed schools, see below.

The weather warning came into effect from 8pm on Tuesday evening and lasted until 10am tomorrow (Wednesday) morning.

The warning will served Cavan, Monaghan, Longford, Meath, Westmeath, Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Offaly, Wicklow, as well as the counties of Munster and Connacht.

A separate Status Orange warning for low temperatures has also been issued for Wednesday night.

That warning will come into effect at 6pm on Wednesday and will last until 11am on Thursday morning, with Met Éireann has warned of "extremely cold" weather with widespread severe frost, ice and even lying snow in some areas.

Parts of Cavan saw temperatures drop to -5c today with motorists urged to take caution on the roads.

In the interest of safety several primary and secondary schools across the county and neighbouring counties too took the decision to delay their openings times today.

Cavan Institute delayed their opening today also.
