Affordable housing need highlighted
More affordable housing was called for at a recent meeting of Cavan County Council by Cllr Áine Smith, who highlighted how such schemes are "working well" in other counties.
She said affordable housing units could be "really beneficial" for families who are "working hard", but otherwise are not able to service a mortgage.
Her Fianna Fáil party colleague, John Paul Feeley, supported the motion.
He highlighted that, while there are schemes in place, the difficulty lies in meeting the qualifying criteria for them.
"The council needs to get the data off people who are in the position," he suggested.
Director of Services Lynda McGavigan said a survey was published by the council to gather such data, however it received an "extremely poor response".
The survey has been re-opened until December 20.
Trevor Smith (FG) supported the motion, as did Cllr Patricia Walsh (FF), who said "we all know of young people who are trying to purchase their own home".
Niall Smith (FF) also voiced his support, along with Cathaoirleach T.P. O'Reilly who sympathised with people who are "caught in that middle trap" with regards to housing.
