Maxwell exceeded the quota by 811 votes following the elimination of Fianna Fáil's Robbie Gallagher.

Fine Gael's David Maxwell has been successfully elected as a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Cavan-Monaghan constituency.

He takes the seat vacated by former Deputy Leader of Fine Gael and former Minister Heather Humphreys, who attended the Cavan Count Centre last night as the Monaghan cllr was held aloft by supporters when returning officer Joseph Smith announced the results of the Count 10.

Maxwell exceeded the quota by 811 votes following the elimination of Fianna Fáil's Robbie Gallagher.

Gallagher transferred massive to his fellow Farney man (+1,788) after Maxwell maintained his strong position throughout, and effectively secured a role in the 34th Dáil following the elimination of his two Cavan running mates- TP O'Reilly and Carmel Brady.

Married dad of two Maxwell was first elected in 2004, and was returned at all subsequent elections since in Co Monaghan.
