Polls open in General Election

Polls will open at 7am this morning as the General Election gets underway.

A total of 60,063 people are eligible to vote in Co Cavan; while 49,089 are on the register of electors in Co Monaghan. It makes for a total poll in the constituency of 109,152.

Don't forget to bring your polling card and/or valid ID to the polling station. When casting your vote try to go right through the ballot paper from 1-20 in order of your preference for the candidates. If you make a mistaken, you can ask the polling officer for another ballot sheet once you return your original sheet and it's destroyed.

Twenty candidates from all political divides will contest the election in this constituency - 14 men (70%) and six women (30%). The constituency has been reunited since the last election, which included a portion of North Meath at the time. Ten candidates are based in Co Cavan; nine in Co Monaghan; and one is from outside the Constituency.

Last time round, the electorate in Cavan-Monaghan-North Meath returned two Fianna Fáil, one Fine Gael, and two Sinn Féin TDs. Minister Heather Humphreys’ shock resignation in September has brought the potential for change this time round, but it’s all to play for!

The counting of votes will get underway for the constituency at the Cavan Leisure Centre tomorrow (Saturday), November 30.

Polls will remain open until 10pm.
