Christmas comes to Cootehill early
They say Christmas is getting earlier every year, and nowhere is that more true than in Cootehill.
Christmas season officially kicks off in the market town this weekend with Santa’s annual visit to St. Michael’s Hall on Saturday, November 16, from 12 noon to 5pm.
This year, the committee is excited to offer a dedicated ‘Quiet Time’ slot for children with additional needs. The hall will be beautifully transformed into a scene reminiscent of Santa’s Grotto in Lapland, thanks to local artist Lidija of Fairy Princess Parties.
The big-hearted transition year students from St. Aidan’s will be there to assist with face painting and also provide entertainment, which will include a disco.
Every child will receive a toy along with a goody bag generously filled by local businesses, including Link Credit Union, Hanley Energy, SuperValu, Carleton Cakes and Walkabout.
Booking slots to see Santa has never been easier, thanks to the award-winning website Cootehill.ie
Starting at 5pm, the renowned St Michael’s Choir and Friends will grace Market Street, performing a delightful medley of Christmas carols under the direction of Bernadette Curtis.
Santa is set to make his grand entrance at around 6pm to perform the important task of illuminating the town’s stunning Christmas lights. Helpers are busy erecting lights and speakers to stream Christmas music on the streets to ensure the town exudes that festive feeling for shoppers in the coming weeks. Cootehill Chamber of Commerce who are the driving force behind all the festive planning anticipate a big turnout to witness Santa hit the button.
ATMOSPHERE
On Sunday, November 17, the Pig Market and Main Public Car Park will be transformed into an atmospheric Christmas Market, rivalling any seen across Ireland. Building on the success of previous years this promises to be their biggest and best market ever.
This year, the town proudly hosts over 80 vendors, offering an exquisite selection of tasty treats, mulled wine, homemade Christmas decorations, authentic crafts, and unique gifts, alongside a plethora of delicious hot foods and a dedicated dining marquee. Come hungry!
Throughout the afternoon, enjoy entertainment from the local CCÉ branch musicians, Aisteoiri Muinchille followed by the Tullyvin Musical Society, fresh from their success with ‘Oklahoma’. Be sure to spread the word—this promises to be a fantastic family fun day out!
