John Magee was dropped to the island by Sean Thornton from Cavan Adventure Centre

‘Off the Grid’ for St Christopher’s Hospice

Two Cavan men started their brave feat this week to raise funds for St Christopher’s Hospice serving Cavan and Monaghan.

John Magee returned on Sunday (November 10) to the mainland having spent the weekend on Inch Island out into the waters of Cavan’s Lough Oughter all alone as part of the The ‘Off the Grid: Lone Survivor’ challenge.

This weekend (Friday, November 15th to Sunday 17th) will be the turn of his friend and colleague Sean O'Flaherty.

The pair are undertaking the challenge to raise funds for St Christopher’s Hospice serving Cavan and Monaghan. So far they have raised nearly €3, 500.

Speaking on his experience, John said “it went very well.”

“The weather was very kind to me, I went in prepared every way,” he said.

John brought basic rations comprising nuts, fruits, sprite and water to eat and drink and took a tent to sleep in.

“When the darkness comes there’s no getting away from it,” he said, describing how he spent the night listening to the nightlife, the sound of water and leaves as they fell on the tent.”

John gauged that his partner Sean is feeling a little “apprehensive” about the weekend that lies ahead.

“I experienced it last year, the difference is that we went out with Tne Condor Team last year so I had two others.

“You’re experiencing hardship but you do it together, this year we had to do it different,” he said.
