Double the number of new houses started in Cavan in 2024

County Cavan is on course to double the number of residential construction starts in 2024, the latest figures from the Department of Housing have shown.

In the first nine months of this year, construction began on 425 new houses on residential developments and one-off houses across the county, the monthly data on commencement notices filed to local authorities has shown. It compares to 249 for all of 2023 and just 42 a decade ago in 2014.

Nationally, there were 11,385 homes commenced in September 2024, over four times (an increase of 356.7%) more than September last year when 2,607 homes were commenced. The September figure for Cavan was 19 units, with April the busiest month in the Breffni county with 268 units commenced.

The increase is being attributed to the Uisce Éireann water and waste water connection charge rebate introduced in April 2023 for development commenced not later than September 30, 2024, to fast track and make more projects viable.

For the nine months of 2024 (January-September), there were 49,007 homes commenced, which is over double (up 105%) from 23,923 in these months of 2023. This equates to on average 259 homes commenced every working day to the end of September.

In the last 12 months (October 2023 to September 2024) 57,885 units have commenced nationally, up 93% from 29,961 in the prior 12 months.

Of all units commenced in the first three-quarters of 2024 (Jan-September), more than a third (37%) were in the four Dublin local authorities. The lowest number of units commenced have been in Leitrim (79), Longford (187) and Carlow (191).
