Popular local pub and country shop hits the market

An opportunity to acquire a popular and vibrant rural pub and shop - a real hub of the community - has presented itself.

The busy Cross Bar & Restaurant in Stradone has come onto the market as its current owners plan to retire.

The property, which is offered for sale by private treaty through local auctioneer Charles J. Clerkin, also includes modern living accommodation and sits on a three acre site just minutes off the N3.

It is being presented to the market in superb condition and comprises a lounge and bar, beer garden, restaurant, shop, post office, commercial buildings and a funeral undertaking business.

The residential accommodation attached is described as being in “beautiful” condition.

Laurence Brady and his wife Geraldine are considering retirement after a long and distinguished career.

“I’m 64 years now, the three children are reared and have their own jobs, so I’m thinking now about retiring,” Laurence told The Anglo-Celt. “We intend to downsize a bit and try new things.”

The business has been in the Brady family since 1947 when Laurence’s father first purchased the property. It has gone from strength to strength over the last 77 years with a restaurant added in 2020.

“We started doing food during the Covid-19 pandemic; we serve food Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, and it’s going very well for us,” Laurence explains.

“We also have Sky Sports, so I suppose you could say that there’s something for everyone here at The Cross.”

The business is ideally located just off the N3 and has the added advantage of securing much of the passing trade.

For Laurence though, the time has come to bid farewell and take life at a slower pace.

“It’s a thriving business, great local and passing trade, and it’s in a great village too,” he said. “But it’s a young man’s game and I’m not as young now as I used to be.”
