Elegant Gems jewellers was established in 1989 by Peter Scanlon and is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. The Scanlan family have been in business in Cavan Town since the 1940s and are well known in the local enterprise sector.
In 1989, Peter branched out on his own when he set up the store; it has gone from strength to strength in the intervening years and these days the wonderful products on offer reflect customers’ personal style and values.
Elegant Gems, which employs eight staff, specialises in creating unique engagement rings that reflect a personal love story. Technology allows couples to collaborate with the design team to create one-of-a-kind rings, while visualising and perfecting every detail along the way.
Whether it’s a classic design or something entirely custom, each ring is crafted with care and precision, ensuring it stands as a timeless symbol of love.

“Whether lab-grown or responsibly mined, every diamond we offer is conflict-free and sustainable,” explains Peter. “Our lab-grown diamonds, identical to mined stones, provide a stylish yet environmentally friendly option.”
The local business also offers jewellery that combines beauty, craftsmanship, as well as that commitment to sustainability. For over 30 years Elegant Gems’ dedication to ethical practices and personalised designs has ensured its place among ‘trusted names’ in the industry. Next year, the store will move to a new purpose-built premises close by. Peter and the team will move 20 yards up the road and into the building formerly known as Cathal Brady’s Bar on Ashe Street - an establishment Peter recently purchased with a change of purpose in mind. “We are truly grateful for the opportunity to participate in this year's Anglo-Celt Business Awards,” he adds.
