Four charged over goods stolen from Cavan retailers

Gardaí at Carrick on Shannon arrested four people last week in connection with the theft of items from various retail outlets in Cavan Town.

The suspected gang members are from the Dublin area and are believed to have travelled northwards before targetting rural retailers for goods that can easily be sold on elsewhere.

Operation Táirge is part of a national garda initiative aimed at combatting organised retail crime.

“On Tuesday [October 8] we received a call about an attempted theft that had occurred in a local retail unit. As part of our response, we stopped and searched a van in Dromod,” a garda spokesperson confirmed.

“The four people travelling in the van were arrested and a large amount of stolen property was recovered.

“It's believed that this organised retail crime gang set off from Dublin and that the recovered property had been stolen earlier that day from various retail outlets in Cavan town.”

The two males and two females - ranging in age from 23 to 33 years - were interviewed by Gardaí in Carrick on Shannon, Ballymote and Sligo Garda Stations.

“All four people have now been charged and are before the courts,” gardaí confirmed.
