Breezy and cloudy day with outbreaks of rain

Weather update from Met Éireann

Breezy and mostly cloudy today with outbreaks of rain and drizzle spreading eastwards across mainly the northern half of the country through the morning.

A status yellow wind warning is in place for counties Galway and Mayo as the tail end of Hurricane Ernesto makes landfull here.

The rain and drizzle will mostly become confined to northern parts of Ulster later in the afternoon, while it'll become mostly dry elsewhere. However, a band of heavier rain and strong winds will move in along the west coast later in the evening and will coincide with very high tides, which may result in coastal flooding and wave overtopping.

Highest temperatures of 14 to 18 degrees with moderate to fresh and gusty south to southwest winds, stronger in western coastal parts, strengthening generally later and reaching gale force in some western coastal parts.

It's going to be wet and windy for a time tonight as outbreaks of rain, heavy at times, spreads from the west accompanied by strong and gusty southerly winds, with gales in western and northwestern coastal parts. The rain will clear eastwards from most parts overnight and the winds will veer westerly and decrease moderate to fresh. Lowest temperatures of 11 to 14 degrees.

Any remaining rain in the east will clear early on Thursday morning and it'll be mostly dry for the morning and afternoon with some sunshine for a while, and just a few well scattered showers. However, it'll become increasingly cloudy through the day, with rain spreading eastwards across much of the country in the evening, becoming heavy in places. Highest temperatures of 14 to 18 degrees in mostly moderate west to southwest winds, fresh to strong for a time in western and northwestern coastal parts with the winds backing southerly later in the day and strengthening in the southwest.

The weather will continue rather cool and unsettled with further spells of rain or showers and rather windy or breezy at times. However it won't be as blustery over the weekend as recently, with some longer drier spells mixed in too and some sunshine, the best of this on Saturday.
