Additional roads funding for Cavan-Belturbet Municipal District

The council is to repair the Cootehill Road in to Cavan Town as far as Drumalee with an additional €269,452 it received in supplementary funding.

The proposal was put to elected members in the Cavan-Belturbet MD at their recent meeting and passed unanimously.

Senior Area Engineer Paul Mulligan explained that in spending the funding boost the council had looked at the Roadworks Programme 2025-27, in particular at projects they could “go and finish” and that didn't require surface dressing afterwards.

Work would be carried out between Drumalee Cross and Breifne College.

Mr Mulligan said that the route had been included in a sewerage scheme some years back and the trenches were beginning to “give way”.

“Its one that can be done within the timeframe,” he added. “It fits within the budget.”

The meeting was informed that the work would be carried out during the Halloween school break. Advance works would be done beforehand. “Its another main road coming into Cavan Town that really needs doing,” said Mr Mulligan who, with roads staff, weighed up the “cost-benefit” of choosing the Cootehill Road before others.

“It about getting a good return on the funding,” he said.
