The late Dylan Costin (24). RIP.

Cavan crash victim’s funeral to take place

The funeral will take place on Thursday of a young man who died following a fatal road traffic collision yesterday.

Dylan Costin (24) from Diamond Court, Belturbet, was a passenger in a car involved in a collision with a truck on the N3 at Drumcrave on the Cavan bypass in the early hours of Monday morning, March 11.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the accident that occurred shortly before 3am. The driver of the vehicle, a woman aged in her 20s from the Ballyjamesduff area, was taken to Cavan General Hospital for treatment.

Her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. No other injuries were reported, and the road was immediately closed off to traffic with diversions put in place.

The road remained closed right up until late Monday evening to allow for Garda Forensic Collision Investigators to complete an examination of the crash scene.

They’re now appealing for any witnesses to the collision to come forward, including any road users who may have dash cam footage to make this available to investigating gardaí.

Mr Costin is survived by his mother Una, father Kevin, sisters Mary, Linda and Nicole; nephew James; nieces Casey, Mckenzie, Alanna, Sevanna and Kyle; brother-in-law Paddy; grandparents Mary Smith, Bernie and Eamon Costin; relatives and many friends.

His remains will repose at Lawlor’s Funeral Home in Belturbet this evening (Wednesday, March 13) from 5-7pm, with funeral mass to be celebrated at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Belturbet at 11:30am, Thursday, March 14. Cremation will take place afterwards in Lakelands Crematorium, Cavan Town.

A number of tributes were paid to Mr Costin on RIP.ie and on social media when the sad news of his death spread.

Mr Costin’s death is the second to occur on Cavan’s roads to date in 2024, in a year that has seen a total of 40 people have died on Irish roads so far this year.

Motorcyclist and dad-of-four Gary Murphy (48), of Garrymore, Ballinagh, and formerly St Martin’s Estate, lost his life in a crash on the N55 at Corlurgan outside Cavan Town on January 2 last. He was travelling home when the motorbike he was driving was involved in a collision with a second vehicle.

Eleven people died on local roads across the two counties in 2023 - with five occurring in Cavan and six in neighbouring Co Monaghan.

By comparison, there were five road deaths in Cavan in 2022, the same as the year before, and six in Monaghan, an increase of one.

Garda figures for 2024 up to March 11 show that 16 drivers have been killed in crashes on the country’s roads so far, 14 passengers, seven pedestrians, two motorcyclists, and one cyclist.

The number of deaths is two ahead of the same period last year.
